President's Update

Mike welcomed everyone to our first club Zoom meeting/social.  Mike acknowledged that these are difficult times we are experiencing and wanted to connect to make sure everyone is doing well.  He asked if there was anyone who needed support.

Mike acknowledged as well that in the next several weeks there will be a spike in Covid-19 cases and that it was important as a club that we continue to connect, reach out and encourage each other.

Mike asked us all to consider "How can Rotary be the most impactful?"

A discussion ensued as to how we wish our regular meetings to occur over the next indeterminate period of time.  It was decided that the meeting agenda would be as follows:

4 Way Test and Invocation/Prayer/Reflection will start the meeting each led by a member of the Pod for that month.

Pod Leaders will work to invite and reschedule guest speakers and will ensure they are introduced.

Rotary Business and Announcements will occur.

Guest Speakers will present for 25 minutes ( including question and answer) and will be able to use powerpoint etc.

We will end with Rotary Moments and "Happy Loonie" sharing.

Pod Leaders are asked to connect with Dave Schulz and ensure the calendar is updated with speaker listings.

Arches Update
At the Board Meeting on March 26th and since then, there has been considerable discussion of the status of the Arches rebuild given our current circumstances.  While the bulk of the finances are present, it is pertinent for the club to consider our social responsibility in this time of crisis.

Motion: That the construction of the arches be suspended until such time as the COVID-19 pandemic is resolved, and subject to the appropriate notification/acceptance/commitment of the various stakeholders in the project.
Moved: Hugh Graham
Seconded: Paul Snack
Carried

The club acknowledges and thanks Frank for his tremendous amount of work on the arches to date.  As well, there is recognition that once Frank becomes District Governor in July, he will not have the time to spend on the arches.  Hugh agreed to work with Frank to connect with all current donors.  Heather agreed to draft a letter to donors and builders to include with income tax receipts to explain that the construction is suspended for now.  Mike agreed that once he is no longer president, he can assist with the work required to support the arches build.

Facemasks
A group of club members is participating in sewing fabric facemasks for use in low risk areas.  Some hospitals and nursing homes are requesting these.  The team will need cotton fabric, 1/8 or 1/4 inch elastic, twill ribbon to continue this project.  Please contact Mel, Ann, Annie or Angela if you have some extra material lying around your house.  Thanks to Jennifer Allen who is donating some quilting fabric and doing some cutting.

Optional Donation
As meetings will be held on Zoom, a suggestion was brought forward that members may wish to donate their breakfast money back to the club to donate to an organization in need in our community.  We have the ability for e-transfer donations.

Rotary Supports
Angela shared that there will be lots of web talks and opportunities to connect with Rotary to support individuals and clubs.  Please participate in these as we move forward,  you will be receiving emails regarding these.
