Guest Speaker

Our guest speaker, Bob Morrow was welcomed.

Face Masks

A number of Rotarians and community members are supporting an organization called "The Sewing Army" to sew face masks for community groups.  So far masks have been donated to Lookout Retirement Home, Seasons Retirement Home and Portal Village.

Sewing will continue and donations of fabric and elastic are appreciated.

Donations

Mike indicated that should members be willing and able to donate their breakfast funds to the Rotary Club of Fonthill, the donation will be forwarded to Rose City Kids or Food4Kids Niagara to support these organizations.  This is entirely volunteer.

Mike will email information regarding e-transfer capability once it is confirmed.

Arches
With the new changes to restrictions on building, the arches construction would have been post-poned.  Heather has drafted a letter to donors and build participants to express appreciation for their support as we await a change in the community circumstances.

Canada Day
It is unknown at this stage if this event will occur.  Lance will contact Niagara Inflatables to explain that we may need to cancel them.

Colouring Book Donations

Lance indicated that there is a request for colouring books which assist Alzheimer's patients in facilities who are isolated.  The Rotary Club of Fonthill colouring books will be donated to support these individuals.

Ronald McDonald House
Paul Allen indicated that normally we would support Ronald McDonald House by donating money for a dinner and assisting to cook.  The House has requested $350 to support a dinner.

Motion: That the Rotary Club of Fonthill provide financial support to Ronald McDonald House for one meal in the amount of $350.
Moved: Hugh
Seconded: Paul S
Carried

Emergency Grant
The District provided an opportunity to apply for emergency funding to support the community in this time.  Mel quickly applied and we were successful.  The $1300 will go towards Pelham Cares.  Thanks go to M.T. Bellies in Welland which is ordering the fresh food requested at a discount price.

Brock University Bursary
Maria shared that Brock University is looking for donors to support students who are in financial crisis at this time.  Please see brocku/ca/donate

Funfest
Funfest has been rescheduled for September.  It was brought forward for consideration that this may need to be a free access event if it occurs.  Paul S indicated that a note has been sent to current sponsors explaining the move of date.  This item will be revisited once it is clearer what events can occur in the fall.

Special Guest
Frank introduced our Guest Speaker, Canon Robert Morrow a former project manager of the Canada Space Agency.   Now retired, Bob is a Rotarian in Dundas, a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, and is currently the Coordinator of the Assistant Governors for D7090.

Bob Morrow presented a visual guide to Canada's role in space exploration over the years and shared slides of the interior and exterior of the space shuttle and International Space Station.

Bob's fascinating presentation reminded all of us of the interconnectedness of our world and the value of Canadian scientific research.  He shared the potential for Mars Landing in future years and the potential role Canadians play in this and future moon landings.

Bob also shared info about "Tomatosphere" a project whereby Rotary supported the purchase of tomato seeds which traveled to space and then came home to be planted and tended by school children.

Club members thanked Bob for a great talk.

Rotary Moment
Annie shared that Rotary International released a Joint Statement on Covid with Kiwanis, Lions and Optimist Clubs International.  This statement can be found here
